My life

At the age of 18, I wanted to be a TV presenter. I went to acting classes for four years and loved them. Then eight years ago, when I was twenty one, I decided to move to Spain. In Spain, I couldn’t be a TV presenter because my Spanish wasn’t very good, so I decided to become a teacher.

I lived in Spain for five years and returned to London in 2005. I have worked as a teacher since 2001. I enjoy my job because every day is different and I get to meet lots of lovely students.

Now you have seen for, since and ago in context. When do you think we use them?

When do we use for, since & ago?

B. Match the definitions.

Examples:

  • I lived in Spain for five years.
  • I have worked as a teacher since 2001.
  • Eight years ago, when I was 21...

We use:

1) To describe a duration of time (for five years)
2) To indicate the start of an action in the past.
3) It describes a specific point in the past. We use it with the past tense.
