“Below” puede funcionar como preposición o adverbio. A continuación analizamos su uso como preposición.
1.- Preposición de lugar: bajo, debajo de
The cat sleeps below my bed
The sun disappeared slowly below the horizon
In this document you have to put your address below your name
The submarine cruised 10 days below the surface
My daughter has a scar below the knee
They are building a tunnel in the city centre 50 meters below the ground
An iceberg has only one-tenth of its volume above water and the rest below water
The cable car ascends below the clouds

2.a.- Por debajo (en una escala de medición)
Today is really cold, it’s 15 degrees below zero
The members of this club have dropped below 10.000
Peter, this year your grades have been below average

2.a.- Ser inferior en rango
In my department I have five people working below me
In the army the lieutenant is below the colonel
Diferencias
1.- Below vs Under
Ambas preposiciones tienen diferentes acepciones. Coinciden con el significado de “debajo” y en muchos casos son intercambiables.
We put the box below / under the table
The teacher drew a line under / below each spelling mistake
I left my bike under / below the tree
In boxing is not allowed to hit under / below the belt
No obstante, con este significado de “debajo” existen algunas diferencias:
Se utiliza “Under” cuando queremos indicar que algo está “cubierto” o que hay contacto físico.
It was so cold that I slept under four blankets
It was raining so I kept the newspaper under my jacket
I wear a singlet under the shirt
The thief hid the pistol under his coat
Mientras que “Below” se suele utilizar cuando el objeto no está directamente debajo del otro, cuando no hay contacto físico sino que hay cierta distancia entre los dos objetos.
The wreck of Titanic remains on the seabed, more than 3.000 meters below the surface
Edward lives in a flat some floors below mine
The village is situated below the hill
The airplane disappeared slowly below the mountains
The climbers established the base camp 150 meters below the top
The farm is situated below the mountains
Un ejemplo:
'Below the surface of the water' puede significar en cualquier lugar por debajo de la superficie del agua (a 5 metros, a 10 metros, a 100 metros...). Si la posición es inmediatamente debajo de la superficie, tocándola, sería más correcto decir ‘under the surface of the Water’.
Por otra parte estas preposiciones tienen otras acepciones en las que no coinciden y, por lo tanto, en las que no son intercambiables:
a) “Under” tiene el significado de “controlado / guiado por”, acepción que no tiene “below”:
Real Madrid FC is under new management
“Under” se utiliza también en determinadas expresiones donde no cabría sustituirlo por “Below”:
Under control
Under normal / special / no … circumstances
Under pressure
Under the law
Under oath
Under fire
Under attack
Under arrest
Under construction
...
b) Cuando posicionamos algo en relación a una escala de medición utilizamos “below”
The temperature is below zero
Most of Holland lies below sea level
Peter is below average intelligence
2.- Below vs Beneath
Ambas preposiciones tienen el significado de “debajo” y en esta acepción son intercambiables. Sin embargo “Beneath” se suele utilizar más en un estilo literario, técnico o formal.
“Those who build beneath the stars build too low” (Edward Young; 1683, 1765)
Beneath the seat is a large additional space, enough for a wet-weather oversuit (Telegraph.co.uk)
