1.- Introduction

In today’s lesson we are going to learn about London. We are going to look at some of the top attractions to visit in London.

We are also going to learn how to form and use questions.

 

A. Look at the following questions in English. Match them to their Spanish translation.

1) Where do you live?
2) Do you live in a city?
3) What do you know about London?
4) Have you ever been to London?
5) Would you like to visit London?

C. Practice asking and answering the questions out loud (en voz alta).

It is good to practice talking out loud. This way you can become more confident speaking English. You can also improve your fluency.

4.- Pre-Listening Task

You are going to listen to two class mates Ben and Anne talking during a break. The class mates are from different countries and they have just arrived in London. They are in London studying English because they want to improve their English levels.

6.- Focus on Grammar: Questions

A. Look at the audio script. Write down the 7 questions from the dialogue that include the auxiliary verbs do/have/be.

Check your answers!

There are two types of questions in the dialogue. There are question word questions and Yes/No questions.

Question word questions: are questions that contain a question word at the beginning of the question, e.g. Where do you live? How many..? Why..? etc

Yes/No questions: are questions that can be answered ‘yes’ or ‘no’. For example, Are you happy? Yes I am. Do you have any brothers or sisters? Yes, I do.

 

B. Put the following questions into the correct categories.

  • What’s your name?
  • Are you Ben?
  • Is it your first day today?
  • Where are you from?
  • Is it your first time in London?
  • Where are you living?
  • Are you staying with a family or are you living on your own?

8.- Speaking Activity

Now we have learned a bit about London and we have looked at how to form questions. It’s time to practice using the new language!

Imagine the situation:

You have just arrived in London. You go to the university halls of residence* where you are going to be staying for the next three months. You meet Mariko a student from Japan. Start a conversation with her.

Here are a few questions you could ask her:

  • Where are you from?
  • In your country, do you live in the city?
  • What do you think about London?
  • Have you ever been to (name of London attraction)?
  • Would you like to visit (name of London attraction)?

Remember to talk to her about some of the top London attractions!

It may be a good idea to write the dialogue first and then practice.
