1.- Introduction

In today’s lesson we are going to talk about what people do in their free time. We are also going to look at some everyday expressions used by British people.


A. Look at the following pictures. What do the people do in their free time?
Do you enjoy their hobbies?

1) piano
2) cooking
3) horse
4) fishing

2.- Speaking Task

Look at the following questions:

  • What do you usually do after work?
  • What do you do at the weekend?
  • What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

Here is how to answer the questions.

  • After work I usually + present simple
  • At the weekend I + present simple
  • In my free time I enjoy + gerund (e.g. swimming, running, shopping, etc)

Listen to your teacher and repeat.

Now answer the questions out loud.


3.- Pre-Listening Task

You are going to listen to two short conversations between friends.

A. Look at the following words/phrases from the conversations and match them to the correct translation.

Conversation 1

Ian: So what sort of things do you do in your spare time?
Julia: Well, I love travelling to foreign countries and eating out in different restaurants.
Ian: You’ve got some expensive hobbies!
Julia: I know. What about you?
Ian: Actually, I’m usually so tired I stay at home, put my feet up and watch TV.
Julia: Really? That’s a bit boring!
Ian: Yeah, but I work really hard and when I get home I am exhausted!


Conversation 2

Claire: What are you up to this weekend? Anything special?
Peter: Yeah. It’s my sister’s birthday and she’s having a party.
Claire: That sounds good fun. Where are you going?
Peter: We’re going to a small bar in town.
Claire: Cool. How many people are going?
Peter: I think there’s going to be about 30 people.
Claire: Nice for a party.
Peter: Yeah, it should be good. So what are you up to this weekend?
Claire: Not a lot really. I’m going to stay at home and get ready for my holiday.
Peter: You going away? Where you going?
Claire: Yeah, I’m off to Turkey on Monday. I can’t wait!


We are now going to look at different ways to answer the following questions:

  • Anything special?


A. Choose the correct ending from the following ones to answer this question in different ways.

Situation: It’s Friday afternoon and you’re about to leave the office. You bump into Marta, a work colleague you don’t know very well. Start a conversation with her. Remember to use the expressions we have learned in this lesson.

  • You: Hey Marta! How are you?
  • Marta: Glad it’s Friday!
