Reading 27º: Eating in Britain

Sonido Stop

1. Everyday of the week magazine articles, television advertisements and programmes tell us what we should and shouldn't be eating and drinking: Drink a lot of water, don't eat many sweets, Eat more vegetables, etc.. But why and what are we eating wrong?

2. In Britain we have different eating habits to other countries. We have three meals a day: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast is from 06:00-10:00 and lunch is from 12:00-14:00 and dinner can be eaten from 17:00-20:00.

3. During the week, for breakfast, most people eat cereal with milk or toast with jam. However, at the weekend it is more common to have an 'English Breakfast' or part of an English breakfast. This consists of fried or boiled eggs, sausages, bacon, fried bread, mushrooms, baked beans and a tomato. It is really tasty, but very bad for you!

Lunch is usually a light meal, we usually have an hour lunch break and so people usually bring a sandwich from home or eat a salad at the cantine.

Dinner is usually the main meal of the day and it takes about one hour. We usually eat meat and vegetables and then a dessert.

4. In Britain, the majority of men and women work and when they arrive home from work they are tired and don't really have the energy to cook. Therefore, they buy ready-made meals, or buy food from fast-food restaurants.

These types of food are very high in fat and carbohydrates. If we eat these types of food once a week or month it does not do our bodies any harm, but the fact is that many British families are eating these types of food at least three of four times a week!

5. British people need to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables and eat less fast food and ready-made meals. Everybody should eat 5 fruits or vegetables a day. In Britain the average person eats 2.

Eating a balanced diet can help us in the future so we should pay more attention to what we eat. After all, "we are what we eat!"
