Recording

Interviewer: My guest today is Sarah Bond, a secondary school teacher. Welcome to the show Sarah. So, did you always want to be a teacher?

Sarah: Well, to be honest with you, no. When I was younger I dreamt of being a TV presenter. I used to go around the house with a microphone in my hand. Everyone thought I wanted to be a singer! But then one day, I did some work experience at a secondary school and I loved it. My dream changed.

Interviewer: So, how long have you been teaching and where did you start?

Sarah: I’ve been teaching for over ten years now. Once I had finished my work experience at a school in Bristol, I decided to get a teaching certificate and three years later, I started working at a school near my house in Hertfordshire. The kids were so friendly and they were very enthusiastic.

Interviewer: That can’t always be the case!

Sarah: Definitely not. Since working at that school I have been to some terrible schools in London where the kids have been really badly behaved. In these schools, there are children from lots of different backgrounds and so as a teacher it is more challenging. I would say that the kids in London behave worse than the kids in the countryside. I think it’s the pollution in the air, it makes them crazy.

Interviewer: What do you do when the kids behave badly?

Sarah: Well, I think the first day you start you need to be really strict. The kids need to know that you are the teacher and that you will not tolerate any bad behaviour. When they respect you, you can then relax a little. That’s the first step. I think also it’s important in this job to remember that not all kids are the same, and often there are children that come from very different backgrounds.

Interviewer: What has been your happiest moment at work?

Sarah: A couple of years ago, at the end of the school year one of my classes bought me a bunch of flowers and they gave me a card saying that I was the best teacher they had ever had. I was really happy when I got that.

Interviewer: That is nice. SO, what about your worst moment?

Sarah: I try to forget these. I think generally bad behaviour can really have a negative effect on the rest of the class and I have had a couple of really bad lessons because of bad behaviour but nothing too terrible!
