USE: Past Simple – to express a completed action in the past

Common Past Simple Keywords:

  • Yesterday
  • The day before yesterday 
  • An hour ago 
  • Last week 
  • Last month

Examples

  • Yesterday I cleaned my bedroom.
  • Last month I went to Paris.

In these sentences there is only one action.


USE: Past Continuous – to express an action in progress while another action happened.

Common Past Continuous Keywords:

  • When
  • While 
  • Whilst

Examples

  • I was eating an apple when the dog entered the room.
  • While he was writing a letter his mum offered him a drink.

In these sentences there are two actions. One is expressed in the Past Continuous (the action in progress), the other is expressed in the Past Simple (the action that happened).
