USE: Past Simple – to express a completed action in the past

Common Past Simple Keywords:

Yesterday
The day before yesterday

Last month

Examples

Yesterday I cleaned my bedroom.

Last month I went to Paris.

In these sentences there is only one action.


USE:
Past Continuous – to express an action in progress while another action happened.

Common Past Continuous Keywords:

When
While
Whilst

Examples

I was eating an apple when the dog entered the room.

While he was writing a letter his mum offered him a drink.

In these sentences there are two actions. One is expressed in the Past Continuous (the action in progress), the other is expressed in the Past Simple (the action that happened).
