The MMR vaccine
The MMR vaccine is a combined injection which protects (1) measles, mumps and rubella. (2) three conditions are highly infectious and can potentially be fatal.
The MMR vaccine was first (3) in 1988. For this reason, it’s rare (4) children in the UK to develop these conditions. (5) , over the past few years, there have been more and more cases of measles, so it’s important children have this vaccination.
Babies are usually (6) the first MMR vaccine when they are 11 months old. They receive (7) second vaccine between the ages of three and five.
There are some side effects of the vaccination but they (8) mild and short-lived. As the injection combines three separate vaccines in one, (9) vaccine can cause different side effects and these can happen at different times. For example, after one week to 11 days, (10) children develop a mild form of measles. About three or four weeks later, approximately 1 in 50 children develop a mild form of mumps.

Weather forecasters have predicted that this winter is going to be particularly cold with temperatures of between minus 15 and minus 20 degrees. The coldest winter on record. With these temperatures, and the fact that it is winter, and people spend a lot of time indoors with the heating on, there is the risk of viruses spreading quicker than normal. So, we need to ensure our immune systems are ready! I’m going to now give you some advice about how to stay fit and healthy this winter.

Let’s start with diet. Diet is extremely important. As the weather is going to be exceptionally cold, I advise people to eat more fresh vegetables each day. Fresh fruit is going to be extremely difficult to buy and when it is available, it’s going to be very expensive, so concentrate on vegetables. Eat at least four different portions of vegetables per day. I understand that fresh vegetables are more expensive than canned or frozen vegetables, so depending on your budget, eat all types but remember fresh vegetables are better for you. So, four portions of vegetables and one portion of fruit. The fruit can be dried, canned or frozen.

Let’s move on now to exercising. Now, as it’s going to be so cold, you’re probably not going to want to go out to the gym or to a dance class. Buy an exercise DVD that you can do in your living room or check out some of the exercises we have on our website. You should try and do three 30 minute work outs each day.
