Writing

Write your answer to the question below.

Your English teacher has asked you to write a story.

Your story must begin with this sentence:

I had a real surprise when I walked onto the football pitch.

Write your answer in about 100 words.

Recording

Dad: So, you’d better decide which sports club you’re going to do in September, Mary. You really can’t delay this any longer.

Mary: I know but there’s no real hurry. It’s ages before I have to decide. The main problem is that I know I’d really love to do basketball but none of my friends are joining this club.

Dad: What club are your friends joining?

Mary: They all want to take up athletics but I’m terrible at running and I really don’t enjoy it.

Dad: Well do basketball then. I’m sure you’ll make lots of new friends and it’s a sport you’re good at.

Mary: I know. The thing is that basketball is on a Tuesday after school and on this day I’ve got my piano lesson. I really don’t want to give up the piano because I want to do a sport. I’m supposed to be taking a piano exam in December.

Dad: Why don’t I call your piano teacher and ask if she can change the day or the time of the class? That way you can do both. I think it’s important that you spend some time exercising and I know how much you love playing the piano. It would be a shame to give it up.

Mary: I’d never thought about changing my piano class. It’s been at the same time for four years now. I wonder if Mrs Porter has times available later or on a different day.

Dad: Only one way to find out. I’ll call her now.

Mary: No, don’t call her now, she’ll be teaching. She always tells me that if I need to speak to her then I need to call her before 10am or after 6pm as she’s got a lot of pupils.

Dad: I’ll call her later then.
